To make the motorcycle a serious adventure touring bike that could compete with well known motorcycles in the class including the BMW GS models and the Kawasaki KLR, the Yamaha R1 received extensive modifications including: r1 forum adapted and strengthened sub frame to attach the top and two side trunks: placed an aluminum box in the space below the tank for a spare chain; placed a small rack on the steering stem to store the GPS; Van Wylick strengthened the aluminum stay fairing on both sides with 3 mm thick aluminum plates; joined the mirror supports underneath the fairing screen with a thick strip of aluminum to prevent vibration from breaking them; installed modified (5 cm shorter) Laser exhaust pipe so the exhaust wont blow against the spare Metzeler tires …
